How to Play Baccarat

Although there are three popular variants of Baccarat, the rules, strategy and approach to game play remain pretty much the same for all. At its core it is a comparing card game played between two hands – “the player” and “the banker”, and each round of play has three possible outcomes of the game:

  • The player – this is when the player wins
  • The banker – this is when the banker wins
  • Tie – when both end up tied after cards are drawn

The object of the game is to be as close to 9 as possible, and if either the player or the banker has 9 in the first draw of cards, it is considered a “natural” and no more cards are drawn.

There are three very popular variants of Baccarat: Punto Banco, Baccarat Chemin de Fer, and Baccarat Banque. The most popular Baccarat Games played in Canada, and other western countries, is Punto Banco and typically the casino always banks the game. The main difference is that in Punto Banco each player’s moves are forced by the cards the player is dealt, while in Baccarat Chemin de Fer and Baccarat Banque each player has the ability to make choices.

Baccarat FAQs

The odds of winning at baccarat are almost equal between the player and the banker. Usually, the banker’s hand will win 45.8% of the time, the player’s hand 44.6% of the time, and a tie will occur 9.6% of the time.
There is no strategy that will 100% ensure you’ll win at Baccarat, however considering the odds mentioned above, a good strategy to consider is betting with the banker, as it has a slightly better percentage of wins than the player. Also, another thing to consider is to make sure you avoid betting on ties, due to the very low chances of winning.
The game’s origins are widely disputed, with some claiming it originated as early as the 15th century in France and Italy, being brought back by soldiers that fought in the Italian Wars. However old the game is, it became very popular with French nobility in the 19th century during the Napoleonic era. So much so that the French Upper Class used to Play Baccarat in private gatherings in their purpose-built gaming rooms. What we do know for certain is that Baccarat Chemin de Fer and Baccarat Banque were the first games of Baccarat to be played, and Baccarat Punto Banco evolved later sometime during the 1940s in Havana and later became the most popular modern form of Baccarat thanks to the founding of gambling meccas such as Las Vegas.
